Save Tonight, Tomorrow I'll Be Gone

Ha ha yes those are Eagle Eye Cherry lyrics! All I will be doing tonight though is sleeping. The packing was a MAJOR challenge. Packing for six months in two totally different climates. I've been explaining the Global Xchange programme to anyone who will listen but I realised today that I haven't explained it here. So for anyone who's interested here we go...

Global Xchange's mission statement is -
"Global Xchange aims to support the development of active global citizens,
committed to working for positive change within communities."

But that doesn't tell you all that much.

Global Xchange is a youth exchange and volunteering programme. You take 18 young people aged 18-25. Nine from the UK and nine from the exchange country (GX works with a number of exchange countries across, Asia, Africa and the Middle East). The volunteers spend three months in the UK and three months in the exchange country. During this time the volunteers live in a cross-cultural pair (that is one UK volunteer and one from the exchange conutry) in host home (a family in the local community that opens up their home to two complete strangers!). Four days a week the volunteers work for a local charity project in a different counterpart pair (so you don't get competely sick of one person). Once a week the whole team takes part in Global Citizenship Days.
These are an opportunity the team to engage in active learning about community development issues in the UK and in the exchange country. Each week the sessions are run by different home counterpart pairs. The topics covered should link to the Global Citizenship Framework (GX's learning framework). In the past GCDs have ranged from Fair Trade, Education, Climate Change, to Debt. During the programme the team will also come together to do larger-scale community projects to involve other people called Community Action Days. Some teams do one or two large scale CADs per phase, while others will do smaller ones on a more regular basis. Past examples have included cultural and global education days for local schools, community cleanups, Development Awareness Days, or fundraising with a local charity. Throughout the exchange the team is looked after by two programme supervisiors. Again one from the UK and one from the exchange country. In return for your time and commitment GX pay for your training, visas, travel, medical checks, injections, accommodation, food provide you with a small allowance. They only ask volunteers to fundraisee £600 towards the cost (a target I've reached by the way!).

So that is what I'm up to for the next six months! You can see why it takes a while to explain to people and thats without mentioning the Introductory Training Course, the Pre-Programme Course, the In Country Orientation, Mid-Phase Review, Debrief and Returned Volunteers Weekend!

If Global Xchange sounds like something you would be interested in please check out the website
http://www.vso.org.uk/globalxchange

p.s. I've also added a few more Myspace blogs and my facebook notes. I could leave them where they are but I like everything in the same place. I'm anal like that! I was going to post links but it seemed like alot of work. If you're interested you will have to search through the archives.

Facebook Archive - Had a Rummage in the Fourth Drawer and Found These Gems

Things We Learnt in the Second Year!

  • K and I are the 'cutest heterosexual couple ever'

  • You will always fall for innappropraite men/women

  • Tea and toast from Nightline rules

  • The underpass will always flood

  • Living on campus was so much more convenient

  • One must always go for lunch on a Thursday afternoon to Mondos

  • Living off campus leads to arguements about bins, bills, baths, base...

  • Duck feeding is an offical past time

  • Only 5% of students vote in SU elections (and not for me)

  • A bag of peanuts is only 95% nuts

  • Vodka may be good for getting drunk but it is not good for your stomach, cheap wine is much better

  • 'Spin the Bottle' is another drinking game to be avoided

  • Vaginias are great (Vaginia Monologues)

  • You will still not do all the reading for your course even though this year counts

  • 'I've seen him naked' doesn't automatically mean you win the arguement

  • Don't go to an 18 movie on a first date

Things We Learnt in the Third Year

Thanks to K, S2 and S who helped with these during one of the LSC days

  • Living in separate towers won't keep K and C apart

  • The Summer Ball is better without a date (for me anyway)

  • Archers + Cherryade = Summer in a Glass (add Malibu if desired)

  • Food colouring makes drinks more interesting

  • The End shouldn't be the day before the Summer Ball

  • The drinks in the SU bar become so boring you invent new ones

  • R-Bombs

  • By the third year it is next to impossible to have avoided the Uni incestiousness

  • Sitting in the bar all day never gets old

  • If you have a tendancy to go cross-eyed when drunk don't walk past the bouncer

  • The SU are shit (by S2)

  • Relentless gets you through those tough third year exams, the ones that really matter

  • I can't write that one

  • Walking from North to South campus is always too far

  • The chances of being hit on the head by you graduation hat are higher than you think

  • Walking across a stage and shaking an old mans hand becomes a major challenge

Facebook Archive - Ks Stupidly Long Myspace Quiz Because I Can't Sleep

99 THINGS ABOUT YOU. NO LYING - BE HONEST.
obviously!

(001) Your gender: female

(002) Straight/gay/bi?: Straight

(003) Single?: No

(004) Want to be?: No I'm very happy at the moment, except for the fact that the person inquestion isn't here right now, if they were i would pribably be asleep given it is 4:52am rather than doing this quiz

(005) Age?: 20

(006) Age you wish you were: I'm happy being 20 but I'd like to stop at 21, definately before 30

(007) Race?: British

(009) The color of your eyes: Blue (but K says they are more grey!)

(011) Scars: One on my nose from landing on a plastic flower pot when I was four years old and quite a few others

(024) Had Sex: How dare you question my purity? he he ;)

(025) Gone skinny dipping: Only in the bath, don't think that counts

(026) Had a surgery: I had to be put to sleep to stitch up the afore mentioned cut on my nose

(027) Ran away from home: I tired but I didn't get far without a car, think I just hid down a bank for a while. Oh there was the time that i ran away on Brighton pier after an arguement with my cusion because I wanted to be the queen in one of those boards you put your head through for picture. I ran right off the pier and hid behind the ice cream truck then decided I'd better go back to find my mother tearfully talking to a policeman! :(

(052) Favorite shoe brand?: does New Look count? cheap and cheerful

(053) Favorite music: depends on my mood currently trying to listen to all the songs on media player that have never been played as a result of Ks note

(062) God: I say Agnostic, woo sit on the fence, well its got to be better than hell and at least if there isn't a god I won't be too disappointed, or feel I'd wasted sinful opportunities. I suppose I do believe in some kind of 'god' but not necessarily a conscious being, a mother nature kind of force.

(063) Love: Wow k wrote an essay for this question! I kind of discussed this above. I agree with K you love different people in different ways, you can't define love.

(064) Ghosts: I'm sceptical, though it is true that there is alot of evidence of strange goings on, I don't think ghosts are conscious souls, just trapped energy perhaps

(065) Rebirth: as in reincarnation? this kind of makes the most logic sense, you can't destory or create energy in the universe, so perhaps the same is true of the soul.

(066) Love at first sight: No, physical attraction but not love, no doubting that attraction can turn into love so perhaps that is where people get confused

(067) Yin and Yang: Not entirely sure what this is

(068) Witches: Not the classical ones, but there are alot of real people who call themselves witches

(069) Easter bunny: no

MISCELLANEOUS
(070) First love? Even with my confused I suppose my first boyfriend at 17

(071) Do you consider love a mistake?: No as they say it is better to loved and lost, its a life experience everyone should have, even if it can make us do stupid things

(072) What do you find romantic: small thoughtful things, like being surprised with a pretty notebook I'd mentioned I really liked :) when a huge effort is made both people feel under pressure to be romantic and have a great night and therefore the opposite often happens

(074) Turn-offs: not washing! ewww! - agreeing with k again, includes body and bedsheets

(075) Do you base your judgment on looks alone: No I admitted to be shallow as I think apperance counts but it is certainly not everything and by apperance I really mean that way people present themselves rather than their physical characteristics

(076) Have you ever been romantically attracted to someone and physically unattracted? No

(077) What is best about the opposite sex?: Cuddling up in bed

(078) Whats the last present someone got you?: the afore mentioned notebook

(079) Do you like someone?: like as in like like? Yes A :)

LAST PERSON:
(080) That you laughed at: A, not full on pointing and laughing, just a little giggle after he injured me, its not a serious injury by the way just a little knock on the elbow

(081) That laughed at you: A probably

(082) That turned you on: Something i just thought of...

(083) You went shopping with: Myself

(084) To disappoint you: My dad, because I still don't know if i have a job or not?!

(085) To make you cry: I don't remember, my ex probably

(086) To brighten up your day: A, this must be getting very boring for everyine except A, perhaps even he is bored.

(087) You saw a movie with: Shrek the third (not as good as the first two)

(088) You talked to on the phone: my step dad, saying I would be home by half 7 and I wanted any pizza with mushrooms on it

(090) You talked to on text message: A, saying I got hime safely

Facebook Archive - Bored in the Reading Room With No Revision

I deleted the first half of this quiz because I'd done it before (perhaps i've been on facebook too much) but this second half is brand new!

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF:

1. Gay Marriage?: I have no personal problems with it, it should be legally recognised, but I don't think the church should be forced to recognise it.

2. Lowering the drinking age?: Like it would make a difference, underage kids will always drink

3. Who is the best hugger: Oh reminds me of a birthday competition, I believe K3 was the winner (much to E's annoyance, he had been practising!?)

4. Sex before marriage?: Again no personal problem, but religious beliefs should be respected.

5. Do you believe in love at first sight: It would be very 'disney' if I did, a lovely thought, but no, just lust.

6. Is there something you want to tell someone: Yes

8. What brand of shirt are you wearing? Dorothy Perkins

9. Would you kiss any one of your friends?: Maybe, depends on amounts of alcohol consumed and whether a spinning bottle is involved!

10. How many people on your top friends do you know in real life?: As in myspace, facebook doesn't have 'top friends' in which case yes. If we are talking about facebook I think I've met everyone except some random who I added then he asked if I 'liked to make friends', not making that mistake again!

11. How many kids do you want to have?: I have been informed by many a person that 2 is the best number

12. Do you have a good relationship with your parents? With my mum yes, Dad is a little more complicated, I don't see him often but when I do it's fine.

13. Do you wanna change your name? Only my last one, it's really quite ironic

14. What did you do for your last birthday?: Went to the SU bar, where there was no quiz, then flirt on friday, got very drunk and tried to fall asleep on the sofas.

15. What time did you wake up today?: 8:30 ish

16. What were you doing at midnight last night? Waiting for the SU minibus

17. Name something you CANNOT wait to do? Finish all my exams (I agree)

18. Last time you saw your father? Last week, he tried and failed to fix our internet

19. What is one thing you wish you could change about your life? Oh big question, I don't know, be an inventor so I could invent a machine to write my essays for me.

20. Which hand do you like better? My right one is better for writing with

21. What music are you listening to right now? None, i'm in the library.

22. Have you ever donated money to a good cause? Yes, the red cross steals money from my bank account every month!

23. Have you ever talked about someone behind their back? Yes, doesn't everyone? I'm sure people do it to me.

24. What's the last piece of clothing you borrowed from anyone? A pair of tights from S after she broke mine, actually i haven't given them back.

25. Who's getting on your nerves right now? The people behind me who aren't speaking english, how am I meant to earwig on their conversation?

28. Coke or Pepsi? either, im not fussy

29. Do you have a crush?: Yep, I suppose you could say that.

30. Do you disagree with a lot of things going on in the world?: Of course, I'm a politics student

31. Do you think there's some models/people out there that should gain a couple pounds? Definitly, Its something I've started to think about recently, I'd never noticed how much women (and perhaps men, to avoid being sexist) are socialised to hate their bodies. There are all these people who won't go simming because they don't want to be seen in a swim suit, what is all that about?

Facebook Archive - Random Quiz (Still Doing My Best To Avoid Those Essays)

1. What is your most treasured possession?
my photoalbums and diaries, the things that contain my memories.

2. What is your very first memory as a child?
Sitting at the top of the stairs looking through books mum and I had borrowed from mother and toodler group

3. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
a police officer, a ballerina or an interior designer

4. Who was your best friend as a young child?
F

5. Where in the world would you like to be right now?
In a magical world where essays are inconceivable

6. Where is your favourite place?
Dramatic rugged places, like the lake district

7. When do you feel happiest?
When I'm with the people I love

8. When do you feel saddest?
When I'm with people I love but I still feel alone

9. How old do you think you look?
Younger than I am, I still get asked for ID pretty much everywhere

10. How many children do you want to have in the future?
3, but everyone always tells me 3 is a bad number because someone always gets left out, so it will have to be 4, but then you would have to purchase a people carrier, if you wanted to take the whole family out. Anymore than 5 and you're in trouble because you'd need a mini bus! (or have to split the family into two cars)

11. What did you dream of last night?
I feel asleep in the middle of the afternoon today and dreamt that I was trying to pick up a duckling, but I slipped and crushed them all, in my haste to get up I then fell into the lake and couldn't pull myself out, which was very scary because there were loads of big fish swimming around!

12. Out of all your friends, who do you think is most likely to be famous?
I don't think any of them have any massive ambition, perhaps K3 will be a radio personality, C could start and emo band, L might be a politician and K could be an 'it' girl.

13. Have you ever had a crush on a teacher?
No I don't think so, I called a male teacher mum once, i'm sure freud would have something to say about that.

14.What would be your perfect date?

Facebook Archive - Everything Works But Nothing Works Very Well

The above title is a quote from my mother when referring to our new house. I consider it to be something of an understatement. We have no mobile signal, no tv signal, the central heating still works on a coal fulled heater (note that mother is not sure that we have enough coal to last over the christmas and new year period), the hot water always runs out, I am half an hour from the nearest town, the roads to that town are narrow, bendy and at this time of year foggy and icy as well. I am surrounded by unpacked boxes, the christmas decorations are yet to be found and when they are probably won't be put up, as mum doesn't see the point given I'll probably be working over christmas, my first year without a christmas tree! :( Not that I actually know when I'm working yet because although I should have been told when my shifts are people have neglected to tell me, I suppose I'll find out when I go to work tonight. Ah back to centre parcs for another holiday, screaming children, difficult guests. The Joy! All in all this christmas is looking less merry than usual. The internet is my one salvation, as broadband is the one thing that works well in this place. Please leave me merry messages of seasons greetings, to brighten up my days.

p.s. we just found the christmas decorations, so I shall spend the next few hours before work putting them up, still no tree though.

Facebook Archive - Disney Gave Me Unrealistic Expectations About Love

This is sooo true. Films with fairy tale endings should be banned, lets face facts, it ain't gonna happen, we are just setting kids up for a life time of disappointment! In the original little mermaid tale the prince marries someone else and she turns into sea foam, which is more realistic to you?

I do still love watching disney movies though, hypocritical I know!
