Skins Series 5 Update

Okay, just watched the first episode of series 5. We already have drug taking, crime and potential mental health issues but I am finding the focus on bullying and the portrayal of some of the characters as outsiders interesting. With the exception of perhaps, Sid and JJ in the first and second generations this is a new direction for the series. We will see where this goes.

Skins vs The Inbetweeners

With the fifth series of skins out in the uk and the american version causing controversy I thought I would share a few thoughts about the program. Here are my predictions for the third generation cast. One of them will be killed off at the end of the sixth series. One will suffer mental health problems. One or more will have a sexual relationship with at least two other members of the cast. They will take alot of drugs. I enjoy the show but is it an accurate portrayal of the life of the average british teenager? No, I don't think so.

Compare skins to another program about british teenagers in their sixth form years. The Inbetweeners. Another brilliant but totally different program that far more accurately portrays my teenage experience. Always somewhere in the middle, not cool but not a total loser either. All my attempts to live the cool teenage life I thought I should be living generally ending in disappointment. Getting drunk at the end of year ball, throwing up and generally embarrassing myself.

What was/is your teenage experience more comparable to?

Little Fashion and Beauty Escapes of the Volunteer

Okay, so fashion and beauty wasn’t exactly my number one priority while I was running around Harlow and Shymkent volunteering and dealing with the daily toils of Global Xchange but I did manage to sneak in a few moments of retail therapy and make-up experimentation.

Had another bash at Effy's eyemake from skins that I tried back in March in this post. Made the liner thicker this time. I really love the colour of this eyeliner but unfortunately it doesn't seem to go with any of the clothes I own.

Loved this look and I got loads of compliments about it. Nothing like a good boost to the old self esteem. Mixed green and purple eyeshadow with loads of black mascara for stewarding at the Bishops Stortford music festival. The green turned out to be a perfect match for my GX t-shirt.

Now for the retail...

Black wetlook legging. My mother says I look like a dominatrix, I love them. Worn here with a vintage David Emanuel t-shirt designed for the WWF. It's so sad but I can't really wear this t-shirt out. It's somewhat miscoloured and thread bare at the back. Kinda looks someone might have been wearing it as a nightgown for the last ten years. Probably because that is exactly what I did before I realised its true value. I'm hoping to use its basic shape as a pattern for a whole load of printed, plain and embellished t-shirts I'm planning.

Did not think this purchase through. It's the perfect little summer dress. However the material is man made and not breathable enough to cope in the heat of a Kazakh summer so I left it at home to wear when I got back, in winter! Can only hope this look is still in next year. Might start looking for matching cardigans.

Didn't make too many purchases in Kazakhstan due to the general rhinestoned tackyness of everything. I did however make a few purchases in the bazaars, see the entry for Sunday on this post, and these shoes! They are fantastic. I love them. They are from Kira Plastinina and cost the equivalent of about £20.

Skins - Effy's Eye Makeup

I have mixed feelings about Skins. I find the program entertaining but I don't think that the kids who probably end up watching it should be watching it. You'd think that it's completely normal for British teenagers to engage in frequent casual sex and A Class drug use. Well I've been a British teenager and my life was NOTHING like this. I would guess the same goes for the majority of young people. Anyway I loved Effy's eyemakeup from this episode, with the dark green liner under the eyes, so I thought I'd have a go at it on myself. I do have a clearer closeup of her eyes that I took as a screen shot during the episode but I can't work out how to up load it. See my attempt at a toned down day time look below.

Image is a screen shot from Skins, not captured by me, don't know who by, sorry!
