Week Three Refashion

Refashion this week rather than refashions. I suppose this refashion took slightly more work than the last ones but I don't really know where this week has gone.

Remember this skirt from my charity shopping spree? I said I was going to totally remake it. Gather it onto a high waistband and shorten it. Well that is exactly what I did. See the results below.

Skirt Refashioned by Me
Shoes Dorothy Perkins

I cut off the original waistband and then used the fabric left to make a completely new skirt. I roughly followed Nayantara’s Quick Party Skirt tutorial on burdastyle which I have used before but I made a few changes. The measurements used are different. The waistband is smaller and the skirt is more than twice the size of my waist so there is some serious gathering going on but it works because it is such a light weight fabric. In addition I used a lapped zip rather than an invisible one. I should have used a heavier interfacing on the wasitband because it tends to get scrunched up when I sit down but other than that I'm really pleased with it.

Too great.
Some things are too, too, great.

The extra gathered skirt is really in now and even if it wasn't) looks fantastic on you.

I'm a baby sewer so I'll ask before I embarrass myself in the future with someone else: What is bias binding????

Hi Roe
Thanks for the comment. Bias binding or bias tape is like a tape or ribbon that is folded in half. You use it to encase raw edges on necklines and arm holes etc. so they are all neat and won't fray. It's called bias binding because the tape is cut on the bias so it will curve and doesn't fray and it's used to bind edges. You can make your own apparently but first things frist and all that. I hope that explains it.

Perfect! I have a similar rose skirt that I wanted to turn into a kind of high waisted skirt. Thanks for this, check my blog at to check out my skirt and give me some feedback. :)
